Five Ways to Help Ease Feelings of Overwhelm and Worry

Updated: Jan 11, 2023

A note of encouragement, with love, from me to you.

The New Year can be an opportunity for fresh starts and provide a sense of hope for what’s to come. However, things are a little bleak in the outside world right now and it is not just the weather.

The steep rise in living costs, health services bursting at the seams, ongoing strikes, travel chaos and a growing environmental crisis are more than sufficient reasons to be feeling less hopeful this January.

If, like me, you can feel overwhelmed by these issues and unsure of how to make a difference here are a few things that might just help…

Change worry into compassion

I know this is easy to say but can be hard to do. Excessive worry about issues you can’t immediately solve has the potential to harm your emotional and physical wellbeing. Try changing your feelings of worry into compassion. Compassion is good. It connects us to the human element of the issue and can mitigate the stress caused by worry alone. In addition, compassion is more likely to drive us to act in a useful way.

Be more mindful

Take time to stop and think about the impact of the decisions you make. How do your choices affect the environment, your bank account, your health, or your happiness. This act of mindfulness may lead to more conscientious decision making.

Change one thing

If you feel compelled to act don’t set your sights too high at first. Aim to make one change this month, such as buying unpackaged fruit and vegetables or reducing your meat consumption.

Make time for gratitude

Take time to appreciate the good things in your life. During stressful periods, your mind and body need a break from the negativity it absorbs. Focusing on the things that are going well or that make you feel good can give you this break. It can be as simple as noticing how great your morning cup of coffee tastes.

And here is the biggie…

Look after you!

You have control over only one thing – yourself. Caring for you is one of the most helpful ways to contribute to humankind. A healthy, contented human is a more powerful individual and one more likely to have the energy to give back.

How an ally can help

In my role as a Nutrition & Lifestyle Coach, I provide my clients with the education and tools to take control of their own health and reduce feelings of helplessness which is one of the most empowering things I can offer. I invite my clients to talk openly about their health concerns and fully explore with them their health from all angles. Many of my clients know what healthy living looks like but just can’t make it work for them. With personalised weekly schedules, clear action steps, podcasts, recipes, and regular check-ins, I can help them overcome the barriers they face.

Is there a better time to prioritise health?
